Coat of Arms

The Kingdom of England (included Wales) and the Kingdom of Scotland were formerly separate states. On May 1, 1707 the United Kingdom of Great Britain was formed in accordance with the Treaty of Union joining the Kingdoms by sharing a single constitutional monarch and parliament. The Act of Union in 1800 added the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. After nearly a century of struggle for global control the "British Empire" had at the height of its power dominion over nearly a half a billion people totaling one quarter of the world's population. In 1922 Ireland seceded under the Anglo-Irish Treaty and became a free state for one day. Northern Ireland immediately seceded from the Irish free state the next day and rejoined the United Kingdom. In 1927 the formal UK title became "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". After World War II most of the countries formerly under the control of the United Kingdom joined the Commonwealth of Nations, an intergovernmental organization of 54 individual member states. 14 countries chose to retain the British monarch as their head of state and became independent sovereign states. Since 2002 those 14 nations have been known as British Overseas Territories. The United Kingdom is currently a leading member of the United Nations, the European Union and NATO.
